Deep Sea World, Scotland's national aquarium, is home to the UK's longest underwater viewing tunnel, an immersive walkway through which visitors can see a range of exotic creatures including sand tiger sharks. The centre’s myriad attractions don’t just swim either; they also crawl and hop, with seals, piranhas and amphibians among the many lifeforms you can expect to encounter. From brightly coloured exotic frogs to the crabs and shellfish that cling to Britain’s shoreline, there’s a lot to marvel at. If admiring the sea creatures at close range isn't enough excitement, you can even elect to face your fears and swim with sharks. Many of the exhibits at Deep Sea World focus on a particular geographical setting, with zones forming a simulacrum of a real ecosystem. For example, one tank is modelled on Lake Malawi, which homes Malawi Cichlids among other creatures. The centre doesn’t just provide a snapshot of the aquatic world – it also helps to safeguard and preserve it. From coral reef conservation to operating an angel shark breeding project, Deep Sea World is active in sustaining endangered species and habitats. Angel sharks can be found at depths of up to 150m, but are vulnerable to being caught up in the nets of fishing trawlers. Deep Sea World’s pair of angel sharks have successfully bred, demonstrating that it’s possible to raise shark pups in captivity. This bodes well for the future of this complex endangered species. As you tour the various exhibits, you’ll further your understanding of the natural world and gain a greater appreciation of the wondrous creatures that swim in our seas. After a long day spent exploring the sprawling centre, visitors can drop by the cafe for a hot drink or a bite to eat while overlooking the Forth Rail Bridge.

Took our three year old son for a surprise daytrip, was not disappointed! Considering the amount of fish, sharks, free entertainment, etc, the entry price was very reasonable. The walk through tunnel we ended up round 4 times as the wee man loved it so much (and not because it was too short!). We stopped at the cafe and for under £20 we got a fresh cooked to order beef burger and chips (proper beef too) with a drink, a full kids meal [of sandwiches (with proper meat) a babybell, a fresh muffin, an apple and a carton of juice], a decent quality coffee and three generous tubs of really good quality ice cream so well worth the money! And the staff were incredible - both in service and with our son, always polite, friendly and happy to chat away, clearly enjoying their jobs! I've seen some reviews stating it wasnt long enough but personally for our three year old, visiting all the exhibits, the entertainment, watching the seal feeding and going through the tunnel to see everything with a stop for some food it was the perfect time, he wasn't bored at any point and once we'd done it all he was content at leaving when we did, perfect time. I hadn't been for over 10 years (probably closer to 15) but we will definitely be going back, highly recommend it for anyone with young children!
